locksmith license process time

Postby unlocked88 » 18 Jun 2013 13:27

Hi everyone,
My question is how long does the process take to get your locksmith license after you have sent your completed application with all the requiremnts? Im in california if that makes a time frame difference.

I sent mine 4-5 weeks ago and called the bsis, they said it could take 1 day to 6 months.

How long did it take for you guys out here in California?

It took me about two months exactly. I was in contact with Philip Ore, who is the current licensing specialist, and it all went very smoothly. He was a great help to me and always responded quickly to my emails. PM me if you want or need more info.

sounds like a you problem.

This is why I've had a Post Office Box since 1994. No matter where I move in my general area, I can always count on getting the mail at one place, even if it means driving one town over once a week.

Why don't you call the professional licensure office and talk to someone who can find your application, ask them a question from your application so you know they are actually holding it in front of them, not just shining you on over the phone, and then ask them to put down the new address or mail drop or whatever solution you come up with.

Or put in mail forwarding order with your current local post office so they know anything coming to your house/apartment will get forwarded for the next couple months.

good luck,

Even if you move you will still be licensed online. There is a license number that you will be issued that any authority figure will be able to look up. You can look it up on the bureau's website when it goes through. You may want to email the licensing specialist to ask him where things are at with your file. In any case, it is better to have your card on you (which, by the way, is nothing more than a piece of paper with your name and license number on it... no picture, nada), but in a pinch you can assure an officer that you are indeed licensed and then tell them your number. They may still give you a hassle and all that, and you will want to be sure you are really licensed before carrying all your tools around, but that is the way it is supposed to work.

I agree with Squelch on this one though; get it forwarded to where ever you will be. Or have a friend get your mail and send it to you?

I will mention that I had one little hitch in my licensing. You know that you have to file a fictitious business name with the county clerk and have that name posted in a newspaper for four consecutive weeks, then you have to send proof of it before you will get a license, right? I had an empty box on one of my forms, but since I was emailing Mr. Ore he knew to look for my app. and we got it straightened out pretty quickly. If that hadn't happened it might have been a little quicker. If he hadn't had seen it, it may have taken way longer. If you had all your ducks in a row, i.e. sent everything they needed, it may go a bit quicker than two months. They do say 6-8 weeks though, if I'm not mistaken. Good luck and if you have any questions I just did this like 6 months ago, so it's still fresh. I've got all my papers and receipts too...

Ah good advice on letting the mail service know ahead of time I didnt think of that, thanks for the advice.

Shoot! I did do a dba/ficticious business name, but I did not send proof of advertising it in a news paper or anything. Were you saying just proof of the dba or proof of the dba along with proof of advertising it?

Thanks guys
