Abus 65/40

Postby paddypadlock » 7 Jul 2013 12:25

Hi all,

I am very new to lock picking and need some help please. I enjoy solving puzzels so picking locks for fun was an obvious choice. I have started with padlocks as I find they are easy to get hold of via boot sales and online auctions ect.
I have now a small supply which I practice with, and have picked all of them several times now, getting better all the time.
There is however one certain padlock which although looks simple has got me stuck the Abus 65/40. I have looked through you-tube and have found sites which explain how to pick this lock and that it has certain spool pins added. So far I can get to a false set but after that no matter wheather I put a small amount of tension or a lot I cannot open this lock, I am raking the lock first to set the oins then single picking, I did manage to pick one Abus 65/40 relatively easy but looking at the key the depth of cuts were very small. The lock I am having problems with has two very deep cuts in the key and I believe 5 pins.
Can anyone give me some advice please.

Many thanks

A deforested half diamod will help you get around those low setting pins.

If you over lift a pin that does not mean you have to start over. Letting off the tension just a tad can drop just the over set key pin.

Getting past the spools pins requires both light tension and reverse rotation.

The keyway on this lock is restrictive, a hald diamond is probably going to work better than a short hook in this case.

Slim lines picks may be useful as well.

On small key ways like this I like to use flat mini wallet picks. They are easier to move around the lock without accidentaly over setting pins.

I have an Abus padlock that is very much like this guy. I find it harder to pick than American brand locks.
