is this 'easy to re-key' praactice lock any good?

Postby Hugokhf » 19 Jul 2013 7:02

I am a beginner, and I have a ERA 5pin lock, which I can not open it after 2 days of on and off trying.
I am planning on buying a similar ERA lock with cut-away, to know the feel of 'setting the pin' and all that.

anyway, I cam across this practice lock:
http://learnlockpicking.com/

it looks vey good, as I am very crap at DIY, and I don't have any tool in home to re pin any lock. no shim, no wooden thing, nothing.
so has anyone use this before?
Is it worth buying and will it last for long?

The idea that I can repin lock in seconds is really nice.
I am not doing advertising or anything, this is a geniune question, please help.

btw, the padlocks around I can buy is Yale, and I know it is hard because there's a kink on the back of the key.

ps, I am fully aware on how the lock work, I have read a few basic lock pick books (or pdf) and watched many youtube videoes explaining it. But I can't still pick the ERA 5 pin! It is suppose to be easy!

What pickset are you using and which pick profiles in your pickset are you using? Is the ERA mounted on a door or is it in your hand? How are you holding the tension wrench? Can you take a photo or video of yourself picking? Maybe we can comment on your form.

Thanks

I am using SOUTHORD MPXS-11, which has way more tools than I need,
I am using the hook and the bigger tension wrench.

my lock is mounted to a practice board that I bought (a wood board which mount the lock to make it looking like a door position, which I can put it on a table)
my ERA lock is this: http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ER3EiK4V3l0/T ... a+lock.JPG

I will take a video sometime soon, thanks for that advice

Eras can be pretty tough.
I have one exactly like yours, and I took it out just to see whats the deal.
It was pretty hard to pick. The lock feels well manufactored. I gutted my lock and was surprised to find only regular pins, no spools or seeations.
Keep at it. Take it apart and pin it with 2-3 pins and when you can get that, add more.
Happy picking.
