Differences in pick and handle shape?

Postby Drifty Flintlock » 8 Nov 2013 19:50

I'm fairly new to locks and picking. This may be a dumb question and my terminology may be off, but here goes I'm trying to understand something here about the differences in shapes between picks. Take a look at these picks.

Now, I understand the tips are different sizes. But my question is that in the first pair the pick part comes out of the middle of the handle. In the second pair, it comes out of the bottom of the handle. I've been looking at different picks, and there doesn't seem to be any consistency on where the actual pick comes out of the handle. Is there a reason for certain picks to come out of the middle and others out of the bottom of the handle? Is it just some sort of manufacturing thing? Or what?

It is for material savings during manufacturing. Take the long hook for example. If the pick tang came from the middle of the handle it would require more material stock to manufacture as the pick tip would protrude past the handle height. Short hooks and small diamonds can have the pick tang come from the middle of the handle because the working tips rise no higher than the handle height.
