magnetic locks

i need to get back into my dorm room

the lock on the door is a magnetic lock, though, i think .
the key looks like a small 1 in. by 1.5 in. piece of rectangular metal with rounded edges. it can somehow be "recoded". i dont know how that works.

is it possible to pick the lock? help! thanks.

The "key" is probably a proximity reader type with a magnetic lock to keep the door shut.

There is a bypass used on these in the UK but this is an open forum.

Why don't you contact either the caretaker or a dorm mate to open up until you can get the key replaced (they can be a little temperamental). If the key has been reported lost or stolen, the proximity reader can be instructed to ignore that "key", all you need to do is go to the person who issued it with proof of id and they will replace it (usually FOC)

the key fron your discription seems to be a corkey
it is similar to a id tag and made from a stainless steel
that can be magnatised in pre defined spot locations

the reader usually has a facility to change the code
by use if a allen key, and the key changes are limited.
