What type of lever lock is this?

Postby nullset » 6 Dec 2013 1:42

What type of lever lock is this and what type of pick does it take? That post in the middle makes it tricky to use the right angle wire picks.

Thanks!

PS The actual lock I have is different, but uses the same mechanism.

This looks like a warded padlock. An old one. All it needs is a key that is similar to the one in the picture you provided to disengage the locking mechanism. A picture of the one you have might be more helpful.

Here's a pretty good photo of the same type of lock I have:

It's a Keline lever padlock. I think you're right, it's warded. So I would need a skeleton key of the same type? I was hoping for something more general since there seems to be many different styles of warded padlocks with different diamter key holes, etc.

Wire or really anything else that is stiff enough to push the lever, and in the correct shape to pass through the wards and engage the lever should open this lock. I am not familiar with this lock in patricular, but some warded padlocks (Masterlock) have more than one lever that must be pushed to disengage the shackle. In that case, the tool you make and use has to bypass the wards, and be able to manipulate each of the levers.

Also, there is an excellent warded lock tutorial somewhere on lp101, you should check it out.
If you do not manipulate the lock, then the lock will manipulate you

Thanks, yes, I found this post on warded locks:

But I guess the main difference is that the key is flat, not tubular. Am I correct in thinking that a selection of tubular skeleton keys would be necessary for this type of lock (+any old tension tool)? Does such a pick set exist?

The lock is most likely a lever lock.  There are a few warded locks along those lines, but normally not as common. If it is warded, then a set of skeleton keys may work.  If it is a lever lock, they most likely will not work.

If you can get a blank, it may be easier (and more rewarding) to impression a key.

Warded locks are normally easy to impression. Here is a thread on impressioning a warded lock.  While the thread shows a dual sided warded lock, the process is the same.

Lever locks are normally more difficult to impression, but are usually still easier than pin tumbler locks.  Lever locks with extra security precautions are more difficult, but that lock will probably not have them.  This thread deals with impressioning a simple lever lock.

There are more threads on impressioning locks on this site, and some are better than these two, but they will get you the idea.  A lever or warded lock takes few tools to impression.  A file that can cut on the edge (or a Dremel with a cut-off disc) and some means of marking the edge of the key (a candle, marker, etcetera) are all that are needed, though some people use a magnifier and light source.

Learning to pick the lock is rewarding, and the threads on picking the lock above and in a search will get you on your way.  However, if you impression a key, then you can always open the lock.

Whichever way you choose to follow (and try them all), good luck to you.

Gordon

Very clever warded lock impressioning method, Gordon! I think to adapt this method I'd need a barrel key blank -- not sure where those are sold.

Googling around has been very informative on warded locks in general, but I did find some similar locks, like Chubb and Legge padlocks. The generic tools to pick these seem to come from the UK and are pricey. Plus, I don't know if the diameter of these tools will match the diameter of my lock.

These picks seem to fit the bill (but the monetary bill is quite expensive for a hobbyist!):
