Inaccurate depth keys

Postby lokpikr999 » 16 Apr 2014 19:56

I got my first sets of depth keys(KW1 and SC6)back in 2011 from lockpicks.com and one day I decided to test them so I code cut a key for my neighbors Schlage deadbolt, but when I tried it out,it didn't work so I measured the depth keys with my dial calipers and found that they were like .10 to high so I called lockpicks.com and told them that the SC6 depth keys were cut too high,so they told me they'd cut me a fresh set that they would verify were cut accurately before shipping them and when they arrived I cut another key for that deadbolt and it worked perfectly. Now 3 years later,I lost the keys for the knob on my garage door(Which is equipped with a KW1 keyway)so I code cut a key for it and when I tried it out,it didn't work so I measured my KW1 depth keys with my caliper and found that the #2 cut depth keys were cut too high(A no.2 cut for a Kwikset is supposed to be a .206 and these are a .210!)so now I was really concerned. So just for the heck of it I measured a random key(a 9 cut)from my set of Y1 depth keys which I got from CLK lock supplies and it was off to(A 9 cut for a Yale is supposed to be a .149 and these are .155!)Has anyone else had problems with inaccurate depth keys?

Alex.

PS:IMO all depth key sets should be tested(And by that I mean have all the keys in the set tried in a lock that has been keyed up to the depth of the cut)before being made available for purchase

It can happen, I bought lots of depth keys for the high security auto locks like 15+ years ago & they weren't so good, which I only found out like you did, when I was actually holding a mercedes 4-track lock in my hand, which I had just finished taking apart & was cutting a key by code, that didn't want to work. After I got that lock to work the key refused to fit the trunk and I wound up rekeying & adjusting the tumblers all over the car before my key was working well. Even the best key cutter machine can go out of spec. which is why it is important to test the machine every once in a while. I hope you can send those defective keys back and have them repaired, shouldn't be hard to do. One nice thing about having a pin kit, when you get them back you would really know if you loaded the appropriate pins and tried each depth key...
