tension wrench lifting when pushing pin - spool?

Postby pillar » 4 Dec 2014 14:49

A question regarding SPP:

I have an Abus lock with 4 pins (N-55/40).
I pick the first pin, then the second. Last time I picked it the binding order was 1-2-3-4. (perhaps that was luck)
When pushing down the second I notce my tension wrench is lifting up.
Does this automatically mean, it is a spool?

Sometimes when I pick the second pin the first comes up again.

Is this a good lock for a beginner?

The pushing up is refereed to as counter-rotation and would generally be indicative of a spool.

That being said I get my picks caught on the warding( the stuff that determines which key can slide into which lock) all the time, which can also give you counter rotation when you try to set a pin.
Finally, I've caused counter rotation by forcefully over setting a pin.

Most of the time, spool, but a spool has many variants. Spoorated, xmas tree pins, mushroom etc. They all work in mostly the same way.
It is a fine lock for a beginner. You already got it open.
