what type of lock is this? I know it's a U-lock but does this use regular pins or is it a disk detainer lock?

Neither. It uses sliders. If you blow up the picture, you can see that the key is a laser-track style like used by a Bell lock.

i thought the way the key is, meant that the lock had two sides to pick
i guess like a double lock kind of deal
can you still pick these with regular picks or do i need a special tool?

You can use a hook, though personally prefer a very small half diamond.

It's interesting that they are using the Bell Lock squiggle key design from around 1920, wonder why they went away from using disc detainer design...

Wait a second. Are there usually other sliders like this that are this price range? Thinking I might get myself one of these just to learn about them... I only know of the 3KS, and vehicle ignition systems, but I suppose I never looked very hard for them.

From the product description:

"It features a patent-pending Z-cylinder, which is a unique mechanism that provides more security than traditional locks. When combined with the pick, pull and drill-resistant cylinder, it provides virtually unbreakable protection for your bike."

Not to be contrarian here, but digging up something to tension the odd keyway is far and away the hardest part of picking these. Not a freaky difficult pick, to say the least.

I bought this "ONGUARD BULLDOG STD8013" U-lock for my bicycle and pay for it 15000 chilean pesos (22euros) in one of Concepcion bike shops.
Solid mechanical protection, but resistance to picking of this "high security lock is minimal =(
