Good 5-standard-pin Lock?

Postby cameraman » 21 Mar 2015 8:50

Hey, after playing around with a Master #3 and #5, I'd like to step up a bit and try out a 5-pin lock, still not ready for security pins though. I've tried searching around for such a lock with little luck, so some help would be appreciated.

I'm trying to avoid Master for this one since I want to practice with something that has tighter tolerances.

Thanks!

Howdy,

A $15 dollar Kwikset at Home Depot is a good lock to practice on. Just dont get the Kwikset Smartkey, that mechanism has a little slot next to the keyhole and is not a normal pin tumbler lock.

The $12 dollar Defiant locks at the Depot have security pins.

The $15 dollar Brinks deadbolts at Walmart also have security pins.

Hope this helps,

I appreciate the recommendations. Is there anything similar in the way of padlocks for simple 5-pin configs?

Many hardware stores have padlocks that can be keyed to match your house. Do not get the Kwikset SmartKey padlocks. But Ace Hardware carries some ABUS padlocks with the Kwikset key. Those should work.

Good luck!

You can also get yourself a pin set for whichever lock you purchase, so when it comes time for security pins, you have them.

Thanks for all the help. Looks like I'll be going for the ABUS at Ace if I can find it. Consider my problem solved!
