Hey, Glad I found this site, I have a question and I'm totally n00b so don't shoot me down in flames will ya ? OK, I have a small barrel lock that has 3 pins on it and I'd like to be pointed in the right direction on how I can make a key from it. Been on youtube and seem a couple of awesome tools, one that had loads of pins in it and he kept twisting it until the lock opened then he measured the size of the pins and converted them to numbers then used the "herdy gerdy" ? is it to make the new key. This looks really cool, but well mega expensive, after all i only need one key So yeah, I'll go do some reading around the forum as well Thanks

Not sure what you mean by barrel lock.
2 things..
which country are you from (barrel lock sounds like a UK thing to me) and a photo of your lock will help us greatly, so upload one to imgur.com or tinypic.com or photobucket.com and paste a link to it in your reply. I noticed you mentioned a Herty Gerty machine, so I guess a Tubular lock, is that what they call them in the UK a "barrel" ?
Thanks and enjoy the forum, Squelchtone

The cheapest way would involve You finding a blank (or making one) and learning to impression your own key. Even if you had that Herty Gerdy it only makes 3 sizes of tubular keys plus pin within a pin, so no guaranty it would even work without knowing which blank Your lock uses, without measuring the diameter. Your lock would normally be loaded with 7 or 8 pins so it seems odd that it only has 3 pins?
Why not save $$ & frustration and just buy a new lock?

yeah hi, Thanks for that, here's a picture of the lock as you can see the 3 pins. I'd like to get access to this as it's a camera, I had to buy it for part of my job and it was £300 pounds, so that's like $443.00 dollars...... and I think since i had to forefit the cost of it then i should have access to it.

Why is there a lock on the camera? And if you had to buy the camera with your own money, then why did you not get a key with it?
Starting to think there is more to this story than we are being told.

OK, this is it.
I'm a cab driver in london.
I own my own car, and since I own my own car then i have to buy the camera.
drivers who hire a car of the taxi firm have these camera's all ready fitted.
They told me that they have the key and I can't have access to it.

I've seen this sort of buiness strategy before.. sometimes for good, sometimes for bad. In the USA, a lot of the times, if you buy a burglar alarm for your home, and a local installer comes over and installs the panel and keypad, they change the default master code and lock you out of your own panel, and only give you the user code or ability to set new user codes, but not get any deeper into the settings. If I bought it, I want full access, but the way they see it is it is more business for them if they can come over to fix or change things later, plus it prevents casual users who google a user manual from screwing up important settings that will then give the real installer a headache to fix.
I can see both sides of the coin. And I know that doesn't relate to your current issue, but I thought it was a similar situation.
I personally don't agree that they didn't give you a key if you bought the camera. if you are renting it then that is different.
good luck, Squelchtone

Do I know you ? .....lol Reason i say that for is that i had an alarm installed, ha! I had a brand new house alarm installed and they got me to put a code in and they looked away. After they'd left a few days later i'd been looking at the control panel and I'd been reading the de-struction manual, and it mentioned a few settings that I wanted to have, then only to find out that they needed the master code to do them with. so contacted the company and they told me that there was some kind of call out charge, i was like wait what ? So after even contacting the manufacturer they just pointed me back to the company that would have installed it. So there's a master code that I have no idea what it is and have to pay for them to come out ?? After all it's my alarm..... ha, kinda funny that this does relate to both my circumstances...

Hello strawdog, Did you get a sales contract or purchase agreement with the camera purchase/install? It should spell out the details of ownership. It is possible that the camera is providing some type of service level monitoring or liability protection for you and the company you are working with. With that responsibility they may have a legitimate need to maintain the integrity of the programming and operation of the camera system. The question I would ask is if you paid for the purchase of the hardware (the camera system equipment installed) if you were to leave that company would they unlock it for you at that time? You may even find that the camera equipment is part of a more complex integrated system and may not work well as a standalone unit or interface with equipment at your next company. -Nick

yeah that's what i had been thinking, if i'd left then surly i would then own the right's too it, i have wondered...after all paid for it. but yeah, so i think in these circumstances then i should still have access to it. you not what I want to see, I see some numpty driving going on and I'd love to watch it back. These cams are awesome on the night shots and videos etc. ok so can i get some help you think or not ?

Since it seems that you are not allowed to have the key, am hesitant to help. The lock may be there for legal reasons on a taxi. You may want to check local laws, which may require it be secured to prevent evidence from being tampered with.

nope the choice to have the cam installed in my own car is totally up too me.
I decided I wanted one and had been looking on ebay and stuff and seen some that were ok but not great, then seen a couple of shots of this cam and it's pretty awesome.
So just thought go for it and buy one from them, ok I jumped in at the deepend I guess but I didn't think about asking for the key before hand....

What we *can* tell you is that if you go to youtube and look up "tubular lock SPP" you can learn a lot on how to get yours open. That's as much as my moral compass can let me offer in terms of advice, and believe me I'm empathetic to your situation. Also note that tubular locks pick then relock, and then you pick it and it locks again at each position, like the hands on a clock. You'll have to pick it several times to get it to the unlocked position. Squelchtone
