Counting pins question

Postby pillar » 28 Apr 2015 8:06

In one of bosnianbills videos he says a lock is a 6 pinner:

I marked the pins but I only count 5:

Question:
Where is the sixth pin?
Is it on the tip of the key? (on the left on the photo)

You are right, that is a five pin lock. He just messed up. Happens to the best and the worst of us alike.

Maybe he was referring to the lock being a 6 pin core inside that lock. I have several stock from factory 5200s that only have 5 pins inside of a 6 pin core. They used a 5 pin key as well. So if I was talking about it I would refer to it as a 6 pin 5200.

When you are talking about a core being 4/5/6/7 pin it's not based the pins actually inside but the slots for those pins.

Or like Gordon said could have made a mistake. :)

Whats the difference between a lock with 5 pins & 5 pinholes and a lock with 5 pins and 6 pinholes?

I do not see a gain in security except on a difficult keyway where no pick can be placed on pin 6:
e.g: pinhole 1-4 with pin, pinhole 5 without pin, pinhole 6 with pin.

As I know EVVA production, they manufacture the cylinder body with 6 pinholes, when the body is enough long (31 mm or more), but use either 5-pin plug with a short key, or 6-pin plug with a long key but in this case always with 6 pins installed in.

The cylinder in the video is 31+31 mm long, thus, the body has 6 pinholes but the plug only 5.
Veni, vidi, relinquo. Vale!

Ok so no difference but think about mass production. Say you owned a lock company (american lock) and you wanted to offer a 5 pin lock for X dollars and then a 6 pin for Y dollars. If you produce one core then it will save on cost. Just insert a extra pin and a longer key and BAM more money. I do not think it is for security because my 5 pin locks that have 6 pin cores just leave that last pin hole empty.
