Welcome.
There is a ton of useful information on this forum. Spend some time searching and reading the various posts. Southord will come up often for well made and reasonable prices picks. Also, Kwikset, Defiant, Schlage etc. for locks. I bought mine from the habitats for humanities restore.

I'm a beginner also and what helped me most was practicing on a lock that you could take the pins out and start with just one pin and build slowly up to more pins. A cheap deadbolt or used product or look on eBay for practice locks.
Spend a lot of time to really learn what the pins feel like when they are bound or not, partially set or over set, how to move through them and know which pin you are on.

Hi, welcome to the forums and the sport! I bought my first lock pick set made by southord company, but for my second more advanced set i felt like stepping it up and got a sparrows lock picks wich is a bit better quality. I usually practice on old locks and padlocks that is not in use. You will find a lot of usefull info on this forums and theres some usefull newby videos on youtube.

http://www.ukbumpkeys.com/http://www.stormlockpicks.com/http://www.sparrowslockpicks.com/Howdy, Fozzer. Well, I've ordered from two different lock pick houses in England. The shipping was overnight air mail in both cases. I guess you couldn't go wrong with either UK or Storm for the more boutique stuff. My favourite is Sparrowslockpicks.com . Excellent quality, reasonable price and quietly Canadian - terrific web site. Lots of new and cool stuff out there, a great time to get in. Go for quality and shop around.

I think the best tools for a beginner is to start with a small hook, a half diamond, and a tension wrench.I would not rake just yet. I would first become a pro a single pin picking so you understand how everything works. How the locks and pins work together. After you understand the whole process of that and are good a SSP then I would move on to raking.
