Lock picks for small locks

Postby latinoheat » 3 Aug 2015 12:48

I'm currently using a set of bogotas. Great success with master padlocks and deadbolts. But i need some advice on purchasing a set of picks and tensioner for smaller locks like yale's deadbolts or my master no 140. All i may need is a smaller tension wrench but i'd like to hear from more experienced hobbyists.

Getting you a top of key way tension wrench will give you alot more space for your pick, thats what i would go with before getting smaller picks. As a bonus, the feedback you get from a top of the keyway tension wrench is alot better, bosnianbill has some good youtube video's talking about tension wrenches.

Sparrows standard hook, Southord Max Yield .023 hook is my new favorite, top of key way tension. With the really small micro padlocks just a rake with turning tension on it and a jiggling technique.

Rytan makes a smaller format set of picks & you don't need to buy the whole set, just the picks you want

This might be what you are locking for:
Rytan has a set of mini picks that are amazingly small. Here is a video of these things side by side with Southord and Peterson picks. They are locksmith exclusive but I have seen them sold second hand if you are just a hobbyist. These are the smallest I have come across and they are not a brand that I really hear to much about.

Check out the video and see if this is what you are looking for, at the very least you can see what some of the other brands look like. The guy says that they are good for European locks, and those have very narrow key ways.

At like 2:40 he actually starts talking about the Rytans.

Hope that helps.

(I edited this because I just noticed that the last guy to post mentioned them, but the link is still a great tool)

Have you managed to find a source for the rytans that doesnt require you to be a locksmith?

The HPC 2000 tools are pretty small, they will work well with smaller locks too.
LAB has some really small tension wrenches as well.

Serepick makes a titanium mini sized Bogota set. I checked them out at Defcon, almost bought a set. Pretty cool, and very tiny for those little keyways.
