Two locks picked and turned 45 degees but won't open ?

Postby fritzthecat52 » 10 Aug 2015 11:10

I've been practicing picking locks with somtttne success . But I have two padlocks that when picked open would just turn about 45 degrees and not release the shackle.

One is a small Corbin and the other a large brass b Schlage lock . I can pick both of them cw and ccw but I can't get them open ? What am I missing ? Any clues please ? :(

might have to press on the shackle to pop after picking...or before

In this post I'll just write about my old Schlage padlock. I picked it open backwards again and the shackle still wouldn't budge , I still din't know how it worked . I decided on using a plug spinner I got with a bunch of locksmithing tools and pick sets. Please understand I still didn't know much about the lock . I decided on trying the spinner out. After figuring out which way to "arm'?" the tool I inserted in the keyway and pushed the button . ZIP click and the lock is opened. WOW.
I had spent hours trying to pick it the normal way . That was a rush . I'm ignoring the Corbin and decided to make a key for the Schlage. I have 2 blanks ready but I didn't get a plug follower with the tool deal. What I want to do at this point is switch out some pins and put some spools or other nasty pins into the core . I want to make this a training lock .
Sorry no pics yet I'm working on getting a camera. One question I need to know . I count 5 workimg pins but I see 6 holes.. Can I turn this lock into a 6 ping with another key ? I'll wait until I find an answer . Thanks for reading this post. :D

I think I know your problem with picking clockwise and then the plug turns 45 degrees but padlock doesn't open. On padlocks, you usually have to keep turning the plug HARDER to get the locking mechanism to retract/turn and release the shackle. You can do that with a key partially inserted, or a flat blade screwdriver or put more muscle on your tension wrench in order to overcome the locking mechanism's spring.

and yes, you could pin up that empty 6th pin chamber and get a longer blank or precut 6 cut key for that lock.

I finally got the pictures . The pic of the 2 locks and some handmade tools . Also the HPC plug spinner that opened the Schlage lock . The little Corbin I re-picked showing the turned core. I tried a little screwdriver and put some torque on the core but I stopped short of damage. Perhaps a precisely fitting "screwdriver" .

I just picked up a U haul lock that is brass with the same problem . This new lock has a working key .I saw some damage to a brass chain attachment Do you think the shackle is stuck ? I;ll upload a pic of the new u-haul lock soon . 8)

Happy pickng . See my homemade tools ? :)

Yes ther is When I grip the body and pull on the shakle it moves about 1/16(max) inch. Also no real corrosion.

I like your hook pick made out of silverware. Was it a knife or fork? Also, what did you use to make it? A Demel?

It was a steak knife . I picked up 5 of them in a rummage sale . I want to make a set wen I figure out what else to make.

I used files and for the ruff shaping a vise came in handy . I use to be a bench hand back in 79 to 82 so filing comes easy for me . The metal is pretty hard so I used new files. They were finished up with 400 grit after smooth out the ruff edges with 180 grit . Its all I had handy otherwise I would have used power tools. :)
