Sterling 4 dial combination padlock - cannot open

Postby john9159 » 15 Aug 2015 4:43

It is possible that someone has changed the combination to the padlock at my allotments. This is a Sterling 4 dial 70mm disc type combination padlock which has only been in service for ten months.
I've cut one link of the chain to release the padlock but now have no security at the site.
Is it possible to unlock this type of padlock?
I've tried in post an image but as it's on my desktop, it doesn't have a url.

to upload photos, please visit http://tinypic.com or http://imgur.com and Upload it to one of those 2 hosting sites, and then Copy the URL and paste it in your reply here:
(These instructions are also in the first top most post in our FAQ & General Information section)

A few questions to think about: How often do you dial the combination or visit the site? Is it possible you have forgotten the dialing sequence and number of revolutions, or may even be dialing an incorrect number, or have a couple of the numbers flipped backwards?

I'm not sure where you are, is weather an issue? could rain or snow have caused the shackle to become corroded and stuck? If someone cut your lock and put another lock of the same model, it may be good to cut this one off and put a new one on that is engraved with some numbers or the metal scratched up in a way that you will recognize in the future, and maybe take a photo of it to compare against, and even a video of your self dialing it open to look back at in the future if you only visit the location every few months.

(I personally dont know if the combination on these can be changed, but please fill out your Profile Location so we know where you are from and maybe someone here who is close to your geographical area where these locks are common can help answer your question)

I just googled your padlock and is this the bugger? http://sterlinglocks.com/sterlingdiscco ... dlock.html
It sure does sound like the combination can be changed, but honestly on this body style more than likely it just has some surface rust/crud/corrosion on the shackle. If you have some sort of spray lubricant such as WD-40 or something that would loosen rust, spray it where the shackle enters the lock body, and then try to dial the combination you think it was set to and then press on that silver bit rather forcefully and try to get the shackle to rotate out of the way. Or if someone doesn't like your gardening, maybe some kids put super glue into the shackle as a prank.

good luck,
