I can't do SPP

Postby guest233 » 18 Aug 2015 20:21

Hi guys I got my lockpicking kit 1 week ago and I am always trying to single pin pick but it's not working on any lock. Sometimes some pins won't stay up I don't know why... Am I doing something wrong ?

I'm not good at spp either, but today I had to pick open an Emtek deadbolt and I couldn't quite get my pickgun into it
cause the door handle was in the way. It spp'ed open anyhow, just took a minute and some very light tension

Keep trying, the first technique I worked with was raking open a masterlock, then I started spping it once I could rake it in two seconds. It sounds like you are not applying steady pressure. I'm not afraid to admit I am fairly low on the picking totem pole but practice makes perfect, for me it is done by feel. What kind of lock are you trying to pick?

tension is what i have the most trouble with. i use very little tension all the time. my advise is go buy a very cheap dead bolt and removed all the pins but one. when it is easy add two pins then another until you get to 5. 1 is super easy may just want to start with 2 pins. what i did but i am no master either.

Try top of keyway tension if you can't get reliable tension. If you use too thin of a tension wrench for bottom of keyway it may bind in the bottom of keyway and not work well.

If you set one pin and a previous one falls down, then you've got to think about the binding order of the pins or else it could be security pins messing with you.

Just keep the tension light and steady and try to re-pick them.

Unless you mean the key pins are falling down, because they're supposed to.

If the pin falls down and there is no resistance or springiness when you try to push it back up, then that pin is most likely picked.

I say most likely because the driver pin -may- be stuck in the shear line and need a little extra lift, but if the cylinder turned a little when you set it and it's not a spool pin, this won't be the case.

Good luck! I've still got a lot of practice before I can say that I can SPP. :)

Another mistake that I have made is undersetting the pin. While lifting my pick would brush another pin or the core and I'd hear a click and think I had set the pin when I hadn't quite lifted far enough.

As already mentioned removing all but one pin in a practice lock really helps build your skill. I would also add to try that by starting with the furthest pin back in the core as well as front to back. It really helped me.

I had trouble when I first started with a flimsy tension tool, I currently use the peterson pry bar tension tool and I love it, its nice and solid. I have problems with top of the key way tension, The tool seems to get in the way of my pick, I have tried it a few times but have never been able to pick a lock that way, not that I am a picking expert far from it, I just have trouble with it.

Try browsing around on YouTube. There are a lot of great videos on SSP, tension, bumping, ect. BosnianBill has a lot of great videos that have helped me.
