Master Lock #5

Postby bartonjd » 26 Aug 2015 17:31

I have searched and none of the posts I have seen seem to cover the troubles I am having while attempting to open a Master Lock #5. I bought this lock at Lowes on Saturday so it is brand new (Tough Under Fire 5KA).It seems very hard to feel the pins compared to other locks I have tried, I have tried raking it, using a peterson and tried picking from front to back and back to front but the front pin refuses to stay above the shear line. The other pins will sometimes bind correctly but no matter how much tension I have tried I haven't had any luck. Any ideas, suggestions etc... are appreciated. Thanks guys

I have a Masterlock No. 5 that to this day I can't SPP, but I can rake it open in seconds with my bogota and a serrated tension wrench.

Sounds like they are not binding in the correct order, so I'd just keep at it. I've had a few where the last pin is sassy, and sometimes heavier tension is what is needed even though it is counter intuitive.

Perhaps someone else here will have some better insight :)

Thank you for the reply, I will give that a shot, what would you recognize in the way of serrated tension wrenches?

bartonjd,

A non serrated tension wrench of your choice will likely be perfectly fine here. A lot of it is preference, and often I lean toward serration as they tend to slip less, especially when holding a padlock in hand. I have the same set our site sponsor sells and like them a lot.
