Do all locks have a binding order?

Postby AwesomeDawson13 » 18 Sep 2015 16:13

This is a really newbie question but I've been watching a ton of videos on YouTube and the videos are making it seem like there is a binding order for all locks. I have ordered some lockpicks off of lockpickshop.com but they haven't come yet so I don't really have any experience out in the field. Security pin locks have a binding order, correct? Also, could someone please explain to me how you know you have a lock with security pins and how to beat them? Thanks for all help in advance :)

Hello, and welcome AwesomeDawson, :)
Yes, almost every lock on earth has a binding order, so this includes locks with security pins. In general, security pins will provide some type of feedback when picking, usually counter-rotation. For more info on beating security pins, browse some more here, there's tons of info. Also, watch some more youtube videos, there's a lot of good ones for beginners, and they provide a visual aspect as well. And if you really want to know how to beat security pins, you have to practice.

Alright thanks Kwoswalt. My PXS-14 pack should be here soon. I will definitely be purchasing several different locks for me to practice on. In addition, do you have any strategies for figuring out the binding order while SPPing, or just start from the front/back and do that over and over again until everything is set?

Tension is immensely important to master. You may find as I did that it is very easy to apply too much and not realize that is why you are struggling to pick consistently. Also picking front to back or vice versa is a matter of preference and /or the lock. Some keyways I can get a feel for the pins starting in the back and others seem to go better starting in the front.

It really helps to work with a lock you can start with by pinning up only one pin in it and building up to more and taking the time to learning to see in the lock through feeling with your pick.

Ok, I've heard that tension is really important by several people now. By the way, how do you take pins out and put them in for practice like you said?

That would depend on what type of lock you have. If you buy a practice lock, it will probably have allen screws on the top of the cylinder for repinning. Most other cylinders will have to be disassembled like this. Most padlocks can't be disassembled, but the ones that can, can often be repinned the same way.
