Cary Safe Identification / Value

Postby tombishop » 6 Nov 2015 11:13

Hi there,

I am trying to determine the value and age of this safe that is for sale, as I am very interested in purchasing it... but the moving costs between the two locations is high, so I am determining whether it is good value after purchase price.

I really like old, antique, historical items and this safe fits the bill. The owner has original documentation and is the second owner. The safe has a working combination but may be without or without the interior lock box keys. I am told it weighs approximately 600lbs and its dimensions are 22"d x 21"w x 30"h. The serial number on the handle is Y50522.

Please let me know your thoughts on safe condition / value / opinions on this safe to help me make my decision.

Thanks so much !!!

I wouldn't buy an old safe without hardplate or relockers to place my valuables into
If you want a coffee table then who cares about the price?

I would say the $300 the seller wants is fair, but I would offer $200 and see if you can meet in the middle for $250. That would be a fair price for this to make a nice conversation piece in your living room or man cave.

Your safe is not from 1940 like the seller suggests, here is some good info on the years Cary safe was in business and when reseller Featherstone was in business http://en.allexperts.com/q/Antique-Safe ... afe-87.htm That puts your safe in more of the 1906-1915 range.

Driving to Quebec from Ontario to pick it up is probably your best bet, paying to ship it would probably add a few more hundred to the price, but then again, you have to pay for gas if you drive to pick it up.

It may be best to look for something locally in your area.

I saw a nice little safe in Florida on ebay and the price is right, but no way am I paying to ship it and I'm not driving 1000 miles either, just gonna have to pass it up.

Hi there...

Thank you for your reply.

The quotes that I have received to have a moving or a piano company collect and deliver the safe to my address and basement location ranges from $400 - $500 + HST. Renting a truck would be an option but I have not the necessary equipment to move the safe and would likely cause additional damage moving from one location to another.

I appreciate your comments and feedback. Thanks again...
