Corbin Co. 50mm

Postby Pipeto » 10 Dec 2015 11:09

Hello everybody,
this is my first post ever, I guess. Actually, I might have already registered some years ago but I eventually forgot username and password  Anyway, thank you all for your precious help as reading through some posts I found great tips. Lockpicking is a hobby for me and, obviously, I do this with my own locks.

I've picking locks for years but, in truth, I'm still a beginner. I used to start off picking and after a few weeks I always gave up, and this happened many times. Probably, if I had made it to pick the padlock in subject I would have moved on picking locks more often. By the way, it's the original italian corbin padlock.

Now, for a few days I started over again and still managed to pick some new locks. But it seems I will never get my corbin co. 50 mm opened. I feel I'm close but not close enough. Please have a look at it:

As you may see, it has a very narrow keyway. For this reason, I tried also to use a top-of-the-keway tension wrench. This leave me far more room. Soon after I get the false set I can set some security pins, as I can see the plug rotating into a, let's say, bigger false set. However, I alwyas get stuck when, at some point, a couple of pins are yet to be set (also, I can lift them easily as I wasn't rotating the plug) and I can't feel any other couter-rotating feedback.

I know from the key that the fifth pin is far shorter that the fourth, so I fear I might be oversetting some pins while picking it. But basically, I can't go any further.
I wonder if you guys have ever got the chance to play with this padlock and may be willing to give any advice...

Thank you all again.

I have that problem as a beginner myself. The back pin, if it sets very high and has a low setting pin in front, gives me a fit. I tend to use too much tension. When I am conscious of it and ease up, I have a better success rate. But still, that high setting rear pin can be difficult for me still. I am probably over setting pins. I have tried using an offset diamond to get that last pin. Seem to have more success with that. Others guys on here that have a lot of experience can probably help us both.

Hello All,
a few days have gone by but I haven't got the hang of it yet. What happens now is that I seem to properly set all the pins (I can fell some "metal noise" while shacking my padlock) but # 3 and #4. And they're not bending either so I cannot feel any counter-rotation while pushing them up. Am I oversetting any pin? Do you have any suggestion? I'm trying to change the order but still I don't make it to get it opened.

Thank you in advance..

That one might have spool pins. Bosnianbill and Schuyler Towne have some good youtube videos that can explain picking spools better than I can. And yes, you could be oversetting things as well, it's hard to say without the lock though.

Thanks. Well, it definitely has spool pins. I have already picked other padlocks and locks with security pins (Viro, Iseo etc) but I get stuck here. Sometimes a couple of pins left don't set and do not bend either, sometimes they all seem set but it doesn't open. SO frustrating... :|

I know the feeling. It was like that for me when I had just started picking, and was on my first master 150. It makes it better when you finally get it open though.
All I can say is practice... something I don't do enough of.

:D :D :D I eventually made it!! It was a matter of patience and hope  I tried to modify the order many times. It is just that you basically don't get any counter-rotation feedback of the plug. But little by little I figured out how to get it opened. Thanks for your help.
