Hey all,
It's been a while since I posted something rather stupid, so I feel I'm due. I just purchased a Kaba Gemini lock from eBay because I don't have anything other than pin tumbler locks, and I was wondering how the innards operated.
It's a dimple lock, looks like 6 ditches on each key, both sides. Can anyone send me links on how this particular type of lock operates? Is it just like a pin tumbler mechanism with the shear line in a different place? Is it pickable? I look forward to your feedback (Even if its a flame) Thank you very much!

I know this isn't very relevant to the question, but I forgot to mention the lock is a mortise cylinder. Will disassembling it make this any clearer for me? Thanks again everyone!

I was thinking about buying that, but decided against it. As far as I know, it's basically a pin tumbler with the pins sticking out the sides instead of from the top/bottom, and is picked similarly, putting tension in the keyway and pressing up on the binding pin. There's also those Matador rakes made for dimple locks, which are quite easy to make.

Ahh, I see.
Unfortunately, I have ZERO access to tools and/or materials on this campus. I'll have to wait until I hit the hometown in a couple months to pick something up. Thanks!

You can pick these locks with standard tools and it is not very difficult. Before you stick your pick in it though search for a thread that has already been created on this subject. When you pick these locks there is a tendency for the springs and top pins to shoot into the keyway, the thread I am referring to outlines a way to prevent this from happening.

Hey Eschatos
A Kaba Gemini with only 6 ditches on the key?
I know Kaba 8. Kaba 20, Kaba Gemini, Kaba Gemini S, Kaba Star, Kaba ExperT, Kaba Quattro S, Kaba Penta: the last born from Kaba.
May be it is a furniture's lock, but i know kaba has minimum 8 pins in his more simple cylinder (Kaba .
I'm new here and i beg your pardon for my little English, but someone could help me to explay how i ca post pictures in this Forum?
I have pics of Kaba, Abloy, Keso, sectioned cylinders, if someone is interested in I can post them
Interesting site with interesting people
Bye all

i've got a kaba gemini, i couldn't work out how to dismantle it, but i know that when Eschatos says the key has 6 ditches on one side, that means there are a possible 6 pins on one side, then theres the 6 on the other and 6 on the top, but not all pin holes are filled.
Eschatos, the thread Eldoc was referring to was about picking DOM cylinders if i remember rightly, so that should help you to find it.
Eldoc, if you're having trouble with the language, go to http://www.babelfish.altavista.com for a translator. theres a thread in the FAQ section telling you how to post pictures too.
good luck guys!

And then there's always my (and a few others') unfortunate experience with the kaba. http://www.lockpicking101.com/viewtopic.php?t=7704 Discussion kind of hit a standstill. I don't think anyone wanted to risk killing their kaba to try out a theory on how to safely pick it.

Eldoc, you can go to www.photobucket.com and get a free account where you can upload the pictures off your computer. They will host them for you and give you a url with the tags already on it. It looks like this but without the spaces between the url and the tags.
Then just copy and paste that into your message, and the picture will show up. Don't forget to preview your posts especially when trying something new. If the picture doesn't show up in the preview, it won't show up when you post it either. This can save you alot of trouble.

You've got everything but the last bracket. Otherwise great job.
Hope you don't mind. I made it a little smaller to try keep it from stretching the page out.
