Help opening old antique dual dial combination lock

Postby jrb123 » 30 Jan 2016 19:16

The apartment building I live in is pretty old and so are the mailboxes. They have these weird dual dial combinations locks on them that I have never seen. In fact none of the staff members know to open them either.
The locks have 2 separate dials that consist of the letters A-K and L-V and several tick marks between each letter. I have included an image of one for clarity.
Your combination consists of 2 letters and 4 numbers, 2 numbers for each letter. For instance G 3/4 and O 3/4. I assume you are supposed to spin each dial until you line up each appropriate tick mark, spin again, move on to the next dial and rinse and repeat. However I haven't had any success yet getting the lock to open. I was wondering if anyone knew precisely what sequence to spin the dials in.

Here is a picture of the type of lock:

I see you got that picture from pinterest. Are those mailboxes currently in use by the tenants in the building?

I'm not sure we can help you get into mailboxes, that's not what we do here, nor do we want to teach people how to get into these if they're still being used for someone's mail.

Here's a video of how they work, this should help you figure out how to dial it and that's all the help I think we can offer.

good luck,
Squelchtone

PS. don't over complicate it either, your combination does not consist of 2 letters and 4 numbers, it consists of 2 letters. The exact letters, and ignore all the other tick marks around the dial. Most people want something easy to remember, so use the notches above each letter, not the other notches. Example dial A and then S and then press the button, or B and V and press button.
