A simple vice

Postby Thanshin » 11 Feb 2016 3:34

I'm thinking of buying a simple vice like this:
http://www.silverlinetools.com/en-GB/Pr ... ols/380523

I don't know how strong is the base's vacuum system, but I shouldn't apply more than a little force, so it shouldn't matter.

Is it a good option?

I don't see why not. It does the same thing as the Panavise, but for less money.

For picking you probably won't need to lock it down with the vacuum base. Get it.

Better make sure you can send it back, if you don't like it. Some of those cheaper vises don't stay very firmly where they are placed

I'd make a bottom that is a tray and fasten it with screws. Kind of like Panavise with the round base.

Can't comment on a vice, and it does seem to have a much larger pad, but I've recently been doing so lock photography and got some snakeclamp stuff to hold a torch and camera in place. One of the attachments I bought was the suction mount and I found it really... uhm.... sucky (pardon the pun). Kept popping off even on glass, with the surface cleaned and the sucker cleaned and moistened. Maybe vices are different but I'd take a sturdy, heavy flat base over a suction mount any day.
