Picking set questions

Postby Nightingangel » 29 Feb 2016 13:59

I've been looking into getting a new lock picking set. I regrettably bought the goso 24 piece kit and have found its, well, very poorly made. For a beginner, should I get a kit such as the sparrows tuxedo or buy picks individually?

What country are you from? We can direct you to an online seller near you and a brand of pick set that is available to you versus other brands such as Peterson that may cost more to ship from US to Europe as an example.

Thanks. If you can get the Sparrows Tuxedo sent to you in Spain, that is a great choice for nice basic quality pick set. Some locks in Spain are dimple with a == keyway instead of a || keyway , you may want to look at a dimple pick set as well. usually this is a set of rakes. with smaller or bigger bumps.

Can you explain that a little better? I tried using the search function for dimple keyway but I don't believe it's working.

In Spain, a large number of homes have dimple locks on their main door. Dimple locks have a keyway that's perpendicular to the movement of the pins. Or, in other words, it's a horizontal rectangle, instead of a vertical more or less jiggly shape. Thus == instead of ||.

To push pins perpendicularly to the line of the pick, one usually uses a circular motion with a flag-like pick. Note, that a standard half diamond pick IS a flag-like pick.

Therefore, when you say you're in Spain, people will suggest you buy and learn to use dimple picks, for dimple locks.

I suggest you start with a cheap goso dimple set. I started with one little more than a week ago and I've opened lots of dimple locks.

Makes sense, thank you.
