Rake help type...

Postby Skyshot16 » 18 Jun 2016 5:48

Hi I need some help with a rake... I started lock picking a little time ago and had a southord c801 set it come with a city rake and one that looks like a s shape unsure of its name... I have just upgraded my set to Sparrow Wizwazzle set mostly because I wanted the tension bars and a set I can leave at home.

My question is about the s style rake, in my southord set I can rake open n3 and m1 master locks with just a flick of my arm but with the same rake from the sparrow set I can't seem to get any thing open... Why is this and how can I change this?

Sounds like a worm rake or a snake rake. Is it the one of the right 2 picks in the below link?
http://www.sparrowslockpicks.com/10_pie ... _p/s-6.htm

If the second to farthest right worm rake, this is good for slow rocking and to me the flexibility in this pick means you have to have really watch your tension. The metal that the Petersons is made from allows a little more give in that regard.

If its the snake rake then thats a great rake for opening KW and variants.

Can you clarify which pick it is you are dealing with?

It's a worm rake... I learn some thing new every day lol. I seem to be having problems using the sparrow one on my master locks but if I switch back to my southord one they open with out a problem, I know I must be doing some thing wrong but don't know what lol

From the link you give it's the one at the end on the right, is that the worm rake or sake rake?

A worm rake?? First time I'm hearing a pick called by that name, clearly its what Sparrows has decided to call their faux-Bogota or at least Bogota inspired pick shape since the undercuts arent exactly the same as a real Bogota.

Ah that's better it's a snake rake... Now any ideas as to why I can't open a dam thing with the sparrow one but I open every thing with my southord one? I know I must be doing some thing wrong.

Maybe it's from slightly different feel on the different pick handles.

I sat there for about 20mins trying to rake my no3 master lock and only got it open about 2 times using my sparrow snake rake then switched to my southord and did it every 5-10sec. When I look at them both together the sparrow looks less pointed on the bend and was unsure if that played a part on how to use it or it could just be me being a idiot being new and all lol, I understand I need to learn SPP too which I am long side learning to rake.

The pattern on the rake can coincidentally match with the bitting of the key, which could be why it opens almost instantly.

That thought did cross my mind but I get the same problem with my m1 master lock too.

If our forum software had a Best Answer button where you add +1 to answers, this reply would have my vote a dozen times.

If you hold a worm and a Bogata side by side you can see that the worm has a narrower profile. I've not had the chance to pick one up yet but I've seen a couple YouTube videos where the two were compared. Apparently the worm is good for smaller keyways.

The Octo Rake (which I bashed wholeheartedly until humbled by its awesomeness) is essentially a much larger worm rake. I am trying to find a master brand lock it will not open.If it fits in the keyway it opens the lock with almost no effort. Just FYI.

I was just wondering at your familiarity with other Sparrows rakes. Any experience with the Sandman. I thought to pick it up along with some other Sparrows picks to give em a try. I almost exclusively spp anymore. I used to be a much better raker than I am today but still have a passion for innovation and design. Just wondering if anyone has gotten good at using the Sandman.

Cheers :)
