Peterson's bogies

Postby redra2003 » 11 Nov 2016 4:57

Hi all.

I was just looking on Peterson's website and saw they had 3 different options for their version of the Bogota. For the life of me, I can't tell a difference in them at all. I was wondering if someone with more experience can help me out.

The third one looks more similar to the original Bogota invented by raimundo.
All the bogota copies I've seen are thicker than the original. This is the one that resembles them the most (except for the handle, of course).

Cheers :)

The funny thing though is that the handle is about half the reason the Bogota works as well as it does. I kind of liken it to a cross between a rake and a jiggler. Of course, that's probably why I broke my double and triple (originals from Serepick), but they did last quite a few years.

I own the set. There is very slight difference in them. They are sized smaller(bogie 1) to larger (the 3 largest). The bogie 3 has sharp and higher peaks, where the bogie 1 is lower, smoother and more rounded. Its definitely noticeable. Some locks will take one over the other.

Here ive included a picture i just took. Top pick is the 3 and the 1 under. Easier to notice

From my experience and what I have seen in videos: There is not one Bogota better than the other but the effectiveness of a certain type depends of the lock, the bitting, spring tension, etc. I have a rake from Sparrows with three peaks which I believe is good for many locks - some might require longer work but I don't want to buy so many slightly different triple-peak tools to get a small advantage in time. Because I believe that by varying angle, type of movement, speed, tension, etc. you can archive good results with just one of this type. The city rake (or L-rake) is a different story

(which I have in .015''). That surprisingly opened locks or caused a false set where the triple peak failed. And the thin version is perfect for euro locks.

Cheers,
Michael
