List of increasing difficulty padlocks

Postby sboudreau » 21 May 2018 6:33

Hi, first post from a recently new lock picker. I’m able to pick the Master Lock 3, and 140 and have a Mater Lock 17 and a Wilson Bohannan on the way. My question, is there a list somewhere of progressively difficult padlock to pick. If not what are recommendation of progressively difficult padlocks to pick?

Thanks :)

There are some other posts asking the same thing, I think you may find them if you use the Search function, but no, there is no document posted anywhere that has list based on increased difficulty because everyone has a different opinion on where certain locks rate on the difficulty scale.

Someone else had this question back in 2006 http://www.lockpicking101.com/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=16633

this post from 2009 includes door lock cylinders and padlocks http://www.lockpicking101.com/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=44156

you get the idea, Search for list or difficult or scale or rating and mix in the word locks or padlocks and beginner, and you'll get more of these results.

bonus: I have not read this list of locks to validate if it is accurate or if it makes sense, but someone on reddit's lockpicking subreddit has made a list by difficulty using a karate belt color coding system, maybe you will find it useful: https://www.reddit.com/r/lockpicking/wiki/beltranking

good luck,

Gotta say the Master padlock #3 is one of the most difficult locks for me to pick. The thing is so tiny and my fumble finger so big I really can't seem to do anything with it.

Yeah at first I had a hard time getting good feedback from #3 but eventually I manage to pick it after practicing with progressive locks. I did find the 140 easier to pick then the #3. You should be able to get it after practicing with other locks, also get a few #3, I did found some very easy and other a bit more difficult.

Cheers!
