Maybe I wrecked this lock?

Postby TheKeyToYourHeart » 30 Aug 2018 20:49

Soooo... Hi everyone, new to the forum, relatively new to lockpicking, I was browsing amazon maybe a week ago, and saw a set of lock cowboy lockpicks for sale, it set me back maybe 20 bucks including shipping, and it's got way more tools than I know what to do with. Not including the practice lock, I have since then picked two more locks. I try to steer clear of locks that are actually used for obvious reasons, but I did indeed try to pick one in my apartment complex that, while not used daily, does need to be operational, probably. The thing is, it rotated almost 180 degrees, but it jammed. Forgive my terminology btw, I'm the new kid on the block  It's not the pins on top (driver pins?) falling back into place, because it didn't go full 180, but the lock won't turn either way. It rotates, but only for like one inch to each side, and won't budge further. I can't really explain what's even going wrong because other than the lock is jammed, I'm not sure. I don't know if, after the lock rotates the pins are supposed to still be able to be picked or not, all I can say is that it seems that the first pin isn't aligned with the others, like the first pin is where it should be and the others are to the side... It's a case of me being such a beginner, cave man lock picker that I can't even put into words anything I think is wrong with it... If you could help me, it would be great, I'm going to feel guilty if I think I broke the thing :? BTW, there are some indentures on top of the lock not sure if part of the mechanism or just aesthetic...

Maybe you shouldn't pick locks in use? Looks like you just learned why.

Have you tried to rotate it the other direction? Imagine you're using a key and try to rotate it, at some point it stops. Try to rotate the plug counterclockwise and see what happens. Then try to rotate it clockwise. You should be able to rotate it back to its original position, one way or another.
Then the lock may work again or not, depending on the cause that blocked it. I really hope that the original key works again, otherwise you will need to call a locksmith to replace the lock.

Good luck and let us know if you manage to fix it.

I would suspect that one or more short top pins and springs fell into the plug or lock wasn't picked properly. You are able to turn it to the limit of the stretched spring, which will eventually break causing more problems. Remove lock from door, disassemble and replace springs, or take it to a locksmith.
