Master Switch

Postby Jim Cook » 7 Nov 2019 18:29

I have a Sparrows Master Switch and am having trouble using it on a Master No.3 padlock. I can't seem to locate the slot at the back of the lock, where the talon mentioned in the sparrows video, fits into.

My padlock is brand new and I noticed that the shackle is retained by ball bearings. Whereas, the older version of the No.3 does not have the semicircular shackle retaining grooves, the retaining grooves are squared.

I'm wondering if they "improved" the design and the changes prevent me from using the Switch on this model of the No.3?

By saying "Got pics?" I'm assuming pics of the shackle.

That is very very interesting. Where did you buy the lock? Im tempted to run out to Home Depot and see if they have this version.

Thanks for the photo

I think they do. If not, try Ace Hardware.

I bought two, one from Ace and the other from Home Depot. Both seem to be the same.

It might be my imagination, but after seeing how insecure the old Master locks are, it interesting that they would make an effort (no matter how small) to increase the security. I bet they are a member here and also watch the Lock Picking Lawyer. :D

Don't worry, I'm sure any improvements made to the shackle or locking mechanism thereof will be offset by similar "cost savings" on the cylinder. Pretty soon they'll be 3D printing them out of plastic...

I stopped by Home Demon today and sure enough there it an Improved Security sticker on the package and the black and white 3/4 parts cutaway drawing on the back of the package shows ball bearings instead of the old spring loaded locking dog mechanism.

I wonder if there are spool pins in them too now. Will have to buy one and check.

amazing to see this change.. mind blown.
