Deep warding in lock?

Postby Dominover » 26 Sep 2025 8:36

In the below picture, you can see a deep warding on the right side of the lock. It makes it difficult to get a pick in there because the top of the pick hits the warding and going in at an angle is hard due to the tight curve off to the left.

What kind of pick do you typically use for this kind of lock? I can rake it and it opens but I want to pick it pin by pin. A flag fits in there but I'm not sure Iim going in deep enough. A shallow hook also fits but again, I'm not sure it will go deep enough.

What would you use here and how would you go about picking this? See the red line in the pic below.

I like to use my pick gun, I start by turning the tension adjustment all the way down. Give a few clicks, turn up the tension & repeat until it's open

Took me many years of practice to get good with the pick gun, you need to hit all the pin stacks so the gun needs to be absolutely level

A short hook is usually sufficient for me. Occasionally I use deeper profiles or different gauges depending on how paracentric the keyway is.
