My Newb Pick Set - Good?

Postby krazy » 8 Mar 2005 17:10

Hey everyone,
Im looking to get into lockpicking and Im trying to find a good newbie pickset.

My only restriction is that it is under $40 shipped.

I have looked around (through FAQs, searching, etc) and come up with this:

MPXS-20
http://www.lockpickshop.com/page/LPS/PROD/OS/MPXS-20

Is that a good set for a newb?

I dont quite know what locks Ill be picking (ie Master, Schlage, etc) but most likely door locks inside buildings (maybe a few entry door locks as well).

If you think thats not a good set, please.. help-a-newb... guide me in the right direction.

Thanks! :)

It seems I cant edit my posts.

I just wanted to add that I am based in America so that is where I will do my picking. :)

Sure. That set would probably be more than enough to get you going.
Don't forget that lockpickshop.com offers a 10% discount off regular priced items to members of this site. Put LP101 in the coupon box.

I have ordered from these folks (in fact, just picked up another order today from the post office) and have been very happy.

Yeah I planned on using the coupon code. :)

I dont need the how-to guide/CDs from them do I?

Also, do you think this set will be good enough to pick double cyliner deadbolts? or is that wayy too much?

Thanks :)

perfect pick set but you really only really need 4 picks , Hook , Diamond , Snake Rake , Ball .. and maybe 2 tension wrench, a light weight and a medium weight.

You could easily get away without a ball. If you're ordering Southord, I'd recommend a small hook, small/large diamond and possibly a slimline small hook and/or deforest, along with some tension wrenches. If you want rakes, the S rake and/or sawtooth rake will be sufficient.

IMHO spend the $40 on a small grinder and buy some $5 plumbers snake, then print out the templates on this site and make as many picks as you want. PM me if you want more details

Just some thoughts I have on this, fwiw:

1. I think that your pick making is advantaged if you actually own commercially produced picks in the first place, so if you've got the buck, even if you do plan to make your own at some point, spend the $$ on a set of picks now. You'll never miss the few dollars after they're gone (unless it means you don't eat, in which case, don't buy them ;) ) and you'll be happy you have them.

2. Though it is true that eventually you will likely only end up using a small number of the picks you have in a 14 to 20 pc set, I still think it is well worth knowing what is out there. If money were no object for me I would order all sorts of picks and play with them some as I develop my tastes for each. I, like many others, tend to favor a very small number of the picks in my repertiore, I am glad I have the ones I do, and that I've had the opportunity to experience using all of them. It is part of the learning process.

3. A 20 piece set will do you just fine to start picking most of the deadbolts you will encounter. Really, the only time you'll need to vary from the basic tools are if you get into some of the specialty/high security locks. That will be some time, and you will have plenty of time to figure out what you might want. In all likelihood, when/if you reach this point you will make tools to fit your need. For now, the SO tools will do great.

4. Keep in mind as I say what I'm about to that I am a strong believer in learning and having resources at your disposal and will almost never dissuade someone from buying learning material. Having said all that, IMO, don't buy the books/videos/cds that they have on that site. There is likely nothing you will find there that you will not find already in print (sort of) on the net and, specifically, on this site. If you get stuck or have questions you have the advantage of having this community here to answer questions and help you through. I sersiously doubt that there is anything in that resource material that you wont get otherwise without having to pay for it. Take the money you would spend on that and maybe get yourself a nice set of warded picks or a fancy tension tools or something. Money better spent.

Hope this helps! Once again... happy picking!

Just so you know, that question about your advanced forum status doesn't really belong in your signature... Did you even read that gigantic post you were supposed to read before you applied?

I dont think that the forum is really the place to talk about my signature, a PM would have worked nicely. Regardless, Yes, I have read the post many times, and PMed about my status, but I have not gotten any response. I am in no way trying to be rude to anyone, just curious; as anyone excited would be.

40$ without shipping seems like a ripoff. I got a 14 piece southord pick/rake set with 4 tension wrenches for around 26 with shipping costs. Although now that I have checked the website they only have the 5 set, and the mpxs-32 set listed, at a decent price. only $52.

After buying my own individual SO picks, I have found I could have gotten by with about 5 items:

3 tension wrenches, std - twist - thin

2 hooks - slimline,std

At least that is pretty much all I have used out of my set.

Getting a rake and diamond is good too of course, but so far tension+hook has been all i've needed :)

What are all those other shapes for anyway???

Imo, all you need is a half diamond, a snake rake, ball rake. a feeler pick and a tension wrench. All the componesnts of SO 5 piece beginner set.

Having said that I recommend you get those picks from Lockpickshop. Although I only really use about 3 from the 5 piece set I'm planning to get that same set myself now I've improved and although only a few picks may get the job done, it does you no harm getting a bunch more to try out. They all have different capabilities and some are better in locks than others. More tension wrenches are a definite must as lock shape changes from lock to lock, some bad boys have narrow twisted openings - e.g. ASSA. Anyway thats my 2 pence.
Have fun!
