Is it possible to prevent someone from carding a door open?

Hey all,

I was just curious if anyone had any tricks to prevent from someone from carding open a door? I live in a student rez at school and I find that many people lock their keys inside their rooms. We just end up bending a card to get around the metal lip that covers the crack to card the door open.

It got me thinking about how easy it is to get into someones room if you really wanted to, and although I'm not really worried about a situation where someone would break in to my room, I found myself curious how to prevent such a situation.

Any ideas??

you could buy a decent lock that has a piece of metal sticking out to stop cards being used.

No, that wouldn't be possible since I'm in a student res. We aren't aloud to modify anything in the apartment.

put a few nails or screws between the door jam and the catch, the card will not go past the nails

Thats a great idea, but I checked and the whole frame is made of metal.

well if you're worried about people coming in while you're home, a door stop under the door while its closed will keep it shut, as for when you;re out, im not sure what to suggest really. you could super glue something small to the frame to act in the same way as the nails would.

loosen the strike box screws so they stand proud a little - has the same effect of using nails/screws to prevent the card reaching the latch.

To summarize: I would like to prevent a door from being carded, but I'm not actually allowed to alter anything. I say hire a security guard.
I'm a little surprised that a rez would have such an immensely crappy lock. Can you really not ask permission to replace the lock with something less substandard? If the lock can be carded open, you might as well just leave it unlocked and sleep with one eye open.

I can't permantly change anything. Besides, I wouldn't bother spending too much cash on it. But yeah, I'm gonna try the screw thing, sounds like a great idea.

it must be a really awful lock if it is so easy to open, no deadlock or anything? almost sounds like an internal privacy lock more than anything. is there any way to stop it opening, like putting the key in and turning it 1/2 way or something? i have no idea if this stops a lock beind carded, all i know is it stops someone using a key from the other side.

could you not screw a small privacy type bolt on the door in a corner, you can normally get one for like £2/$2, nothing much and youy can just take it off again when you leave and no-one would really know anything.

Just don't forget about the booby traps when you come home....

Anyway, you'd only make that mistake once.

dont leave the key in other side of the door as you may as well leave the door open 9out of 10 lever locks can be opened from the other side if the key is left in and some cylinder locks can also be opened from the other side as well. better use a wedge if you are in and a door alarm if you are out you can get ones that stick to the door frame on the insde and have a small delay so there is enough time for you to get a key in it to switch it off. because its not prmanent or scerwed to the door then the owner of the building probably wont mind you using it
