Lock made by Lori- My locksmith said it was a schlage

Postby kb9tke » 22 Mar 2005 22:12

I have finally gained some confidence in my local locksmith and he has lent me some lockes to practice picking with. One was a Kwickset with a keyway on both sides of this little display. the other one has the same display board but only one keyway. The other side is a turn latch. On the keyway the lock says Lori and gives the address as Southington, CT. He said that the lock itself was a schlage. I picked it faster than the Kwicksets. I did a search on this site and could not find any reference to Lori locks being made by schlage. And from what I have learned on this site, Schlage locks are supposed to be harder to pick. Can somebody give me any more information on this? I am a newcomer, but have had some good success at picking almost every lock Ihave been able to get my hands on. Thanks for all the information that I have gathered on this site. It has helped me progress rather quickly. I really mean it. THANK YOU to all of you Veterens that have given your experience to us new to the craft.

schlage

Schlage primus is diffucult if you dont understand the sidebar pins, Schlage everest has a little trick to it too, but schlage 5 pin or 6 pin shouldn't be a great problem for a beginner, they are well made, but usually no trick pins. :)

Maybe he meant the keyway was a schlage. Lori is a different manufacturer of locks, but has a few keyway options avaiable. I see their deadbolt on many commercial doors.

Lori does in fact make a very popular deadbolt - or rather, they did until they were purchased by ILCO, now ILCO makes a very popular deadbolt...

Anyway. The Lori deadbolt is cool because it takes a mortise cylinder and that means that you can put dang near any brand of lock cylinder into it. Very handy for maintining verstile stock with minimum investment.

Good quality bolt, full one inch throw with almost an inch still in the door. But it could be a Yale cylinder, or a Schlage, or a Medeco or a Mult-T-Lock...

But not usually posessing of a Lori cylinder...

The point is that, agreeing with davidjr, Lori was an aftermarket manufacturer. Their products copied or retrofitted other designs and, as such, a Lori cylinder would be a Schlage keyway, a Corbin keyway, or a Yale, etc... And commonly referred to thusly.

So, is your imitation Schlage (Lori brand) cylinder every bit the challenge that a factory original commercial Schlage deadbolt cylinder would be?

Nope. Probably not.

Is is still the sort of thing that most locksmiths would refer to as a Schlage cylinder - just because it has a Schlage keyway.

Yes.

Also, display locks, sometimes not keyed so great, might want to take a peak at the key for that - or the guts. Nothing more embarassing than a display that you've lost the key for so sometimes they are missing a few parts to make them sort of easy to get into.
