hey, i'm new to lockpicking and i've been trying to pick this old Magnum lock that i found in my garage. i'm wondering if this is a good lock to start with and, if not, which types and brands of locks are good for newbies like me.

good locks are the ones that open , and bad ones are those that dont, im not being funny here, you can get a real high security lock that pops open in a few seconds, and then you can get the budget cylinder that just wont play, also you get the lock that will open on monday but tuesday no way.

most locks at some time will fight back, but as a rule start on budget locks with no anti picks, learn how the lock works , strip it down and rebuild it, first with 1 pin , then 2 pins then so on till you have all pins in and the lock opens, locks will become easier to pick once you understand the little beastie, there is no short cut, just practice, and a little advice on 101 and read and digest the mit guide.

I have never heard of magnum locks, but ok...

First off, please fill out your profile, it helps us know you better. Secondly, I highly suggest you start off on a Kwickset lock or a similar one. This way, you can remove the pins and start off picking one by one, just so you get the feel of it. After you manage that, continue up onto a Masterlock #3, and then you should be able to find your way from there on.
