Pros:
Can sometimes quickly open locks with no/very little skill (instant gratification).

Cons:
Doesn't really teach you anything (eg feel).
Can damage some locks.
Doesn't work on all locks.

As far as the choice between mechanical one and an electric one I don't know if one is better than the other as I only have an electric one.

If you want to open some locks without much skill then you might want to invest in one. If you want to learn the "feel" and more about the locks then I would recommend on waiting.

If you want to be a locksmith or are already one then buy an electric one, if you want to pick locks as a hobby dont buy either,

Even the electric one do require some skill and pratice to get them to work.

I would say if you want to learn locking picking start with picks and read as much as you can its better that way and you will get the feel for it..

But if you are going to be a landlord and some donkey as change the lock get a electric one...

More tools you have the better you can become...

The above was on the right track initially, but:

.....I wouldn't go advising that.

Some people have more cash than brain cells, and are thus able to buy practically every pickset available.

Get a small pickset to start off with, then read/practice/read/practice.....

Too many picks will probably end up in confusion.

I'm sure the "themessiah", who's last post was almost a year ago, will be pleased to know that.
