Impressioning trouble

I bought a few blank master lock keys to practice impressioning with. I've burned through all of them without much to show for it. As I have the original keys, I can compare the blank to the original and see how i'm doing. The problem I'm having is that I ALWAYS get marks. One the last one, I even switched to 1000 grit sandpaper around a small file so I would take off less material, but I can't get any distinctino between the pins regardless of depth. I'm filing one position at a time, but nothing seems to be working for me. Do i need to try a different kind of lock or am I likely doing something else wrong?

Get some cheap cam locks and try them first. These are wafewr locks and you will find them easier to impression than pin tumbler locks.

You mean like a cheap file cabinet type lock? I've never been able to find a locksmith that has blanks for those.

Yeah seriously. I'll swing by one this week and see if they sell wafer locks that they actually stock blanks for. The problem might be that the locksmiths I tend towad are the ones who generally work with better locks and make their money on commercial installations rather than copying keys.

Most of the common cam locks in the USA will take an IN8/Y11 blank.

ACE, Lowes and Home Depot all sell cam locks and you should be able to get the IN8/Y11 blanks at any lock shop. If they want alot for the keys, just make sure the blank will fit in the lock and then look on the internet for someone that will sell you a box of blanks.
