Looking into the keyway.

I do it all the time. You can spot the short bottom pins easily by the split between top and bottom tumblers. Also this can give you a heads-up in the case of a high-low-high situation.

I actually use the jewelers loops. You can get a set (2.5, 5.0, and, 10 X) on Ebay for $.99 if your patient for a few weeks. I only really use it for my dimple locks to look at side bars etc. The more you can visualize the workings of the lock the better you will become. The better you become, the less you'll need to visualize the internals of the lock, you will simply feel it, it becomes a bit automatic.

If my life depended on it, or even as a sport, I would like to learn everything there is to know about a lock...knowledge is power, if nothing else, it increases your confidence.

I look AT the lock regularly, to the point that if I'm picking something in the dark, I need a light -- I don't like coming out of the lock and having to feel around to get back in. But I don't get down and try to squint inside. What am I going to find? Tiny green men waving at me?

When I'm picking a difficult lock (in my hands - I always pick with the lock in my hands) I wil sometimes look inside the lock after I have set a number of pins. Sometimes I will even tip the lock upside down and peer down the keyway to look for deep cut pins and the like. That'll sometimes give me a few clues.
