Is it me or the locks?

Postby nightrider » 12 Aug 2005 10:43

I went to Defcon 13 where I was very impressed with the Lock Picking seminar and a couple of other things i saw to do with locks. Well since that time i've made some of my own picks as well as bought some Southord pics and i'm confused because of how quick i'm picking this up. Since defcon I've been able to pretty mutch pick everything i've got my hands on withing 10 minutes. I know the locks i started out with were not very impressive but i've worked my way up and would really like to know what is a good way to test my skills or to atleast see where i'm rated among others as far as what i'm able to pick and how quick. To date i've opened about 15 random master and various other pad locks (i'm sure most people can pick a padlock if they don't have some of the more difficult security features like security pins so i'm not braggin). I've opened every door i can find including my parents doors (thats probably a total of 12 different door locks that i've opened and i'm not talking about just raking the hell out of them but i've actually picked them and raked them, I also know you should not pick your own locks that are in use because you can dammage them). I've also opened 6 different dead bolts over and over again with no trouble. The longest it has taken me after the first initial pick was 5 minutes. The last one i did was on my supposed security door at my shop. Can't remember the name off the top of my head but to lock or unlock it from either outside or inside requires a key. After picking it i think they consider it a secure lock because it has the top of the keyway partially blocked and on the actual key it is grooved so it was impossible to get a hook pic in and pick it. What i did was i took the snake rake and wiggled it in there and used the humps on the back to find the pins that were binding and then i just put a little less tension and a little more preasure on the pin and i got it open in less than a minues. Then i had to see how fast i could do it and i got it down to 6 seconds. I'm not braggin or anthing but is it me or the locks i'm picking. Has anyone else ever just picked up a pick and just been naturaly good at it? I would really like to thank whomever it was who did the lock picking presentation at Defcon this year because that hooked me and i love picking locks. I am thinking that i might look into getting some formal training and maybe become a locksmith.

later.
I live my life 1 lock pick at a time. In that time i'm picking that 1 lock i'm free.

The locks that you've mentioned are not that hard to pick, so it's partly the locks. But it takes natural skill to be able to learn and execute lock picking at such an early stage, thus it's also partly you. So its a little of both.

Ya that is how i feel. What really scares me though is the fact that most locks atleast where I live are either like this or even easier to pick. ITS CRAZY. I think i'm going to start playing with automotive lock picking and see how much of that i can grasp on my own without taking some classes or training. I'm really thinking that i want to be a locksmith. I'm also planning on atleast entering next years Defcon Lock pick contest.

Thanks for the reply. I really apreciate it.

You'll find that the hobby of lockpicking is brutally honest in showing how insecure locks are. As far as automotive picking... wouldn't recommend it yet. Automotive locks are a lot easier to break while picking then normal pin tumbler, and if you want to be a locksmith, auto-bypassing is where you should focus. Good-luck in the next Defcon lockpicking contest.

I doubt i will pick the lock on my car. I'll probably go to the salvage yard and grab a couple to play with. I also will play with auto-bypassing. I've used a slim jim a couple of times and have been looking at all the different tools. Thanks for all the possitive critisism.

If you do start fiddling with car locks, I recommend going to your local junk yard, and ask for those locks. You don't want to pick your own car lock, just in case it breaks. Your first couple of automotive locks may break, because you won't have the hang of it, but practice and patience go along way in this sport.

I'm sorry, It's difficult for me to stay on topic at my age, anyone who gets the joke please say, aye

Your initial skill seems impressive, at the very least it will enhance your confidence. Many of us are looking for ways to compete against others to see how good we really are. (LSI) Locksports International, is one big move toward this goal, I've even tried to start a small lock-share program myself. I would encourage you to look into these.

p.s. I'm better than you

There is literally and truly no way to characterize fandom of Knight Rider past the year 1995 other than geekitude.

Cough Cough Not spelt the same Cough Cough. I'm actually nicknamed after the guy in Mad Max. Something to do with my bike being a piece of crap and me being somekind of outlaw or something. I really don't know what they are talking about. Ya I didn't like the Knight Rider show but i like the car K.I.T. I also go by the name of Silent Serpent. OH and just for a reallity check i found a medeco padlock on the side of the road 2 days ago and am not able to pick it. What a beautiful lock. Maybe with some real experience it will be a possibility but i doubt anytime soon. I'm really impressed with this forum. You guys are really decent to people here. I'm glad to be part of the community and hope to start helping those out who know less than I do.

Thanks everyone

I used to own "KIT", sans the silly voice, crazy buttons, smoke bombs, oil slicks, tracking software, and anything else that made KIT cool. It was a fun car tho. I didn't buy it because I was a big Knightrider fan or anything. I bought it because I was 18, single, and full of testosterone.
