UPVC Door Lock - Help!

I cant get my head around this,you said that you opened the door from the inside with a bent bit of bar,which indicates that the mechanism is working ok,also you said that the thumbturn would not open the door,thus pointing to a busted lock, you can check by closing the door,lifting the handle and checking there is no play at the top and bottom of the door,then fetch the handle back to the centre position,and check for play again,if you have play then the mechanism is working,and you only have a broken lock.
there's no such thing as gravity.The earth SUCKS!!

Sorry mate when i said fetch the handle back to centre,i meant open the door,close it, but dont pick up the handle,then check for play,hope this helps.
