Next lock?

Postby hornetdt » 18 Apr 2006 20:15

As a follow up to my last post, i'm very interested in a lock that is 5-pin based, and incorporates a mix of regular and spooled pins. I would like to move up to simple defeat of the spooled pins and am having a difficult time doing so with my current stash of pads. I would be happy to transition away from padlocks. Right now i am unable to crack my brinks 5pin brass lock due to too many spools and VERY HEAVy pin spring tension. Also the R70 i purchased is admittedly above my head. I would REALLY appreciate suggestions for a next GOOD lock that is just a step ahead of where i am. Thanks in advance!

Not sure where you're at, but if you're in the states, swing down to a Lowe's and pick up a Defiant deadbolt project pack. They're machined to be compatible with Kwiksets, and they have a spool driver in the third chamber. If you get a pack of two 2-key deadbolts, then you've got four plugs and cylinders to play with and four spool pins to rearrange.

Alternatively, you can pick up a repinning kit with security drivers in it and a single deadbolt. But, you'll probably want to move toward deadbolts from padlocks... deadbolts are much easier to repin and learn from than padlocks are.

Hey guys thanks a lot. Curry, that actually sounds like a really good idea. I'm in arizona, so finding a lowe's should be cake. Again, many thanks.

If you fill out your profile, it will let people know where you are.

I'd go with buying a small pinning set and lock from someone. I know Varjeal does a nice set (varjeal.com) with a lock and some bits to play with.

If you can, you should try and find someone to send you an europrofile cylinder. I think they are really good things for locksport hobbyists, small enough to fit into your pocket, so you can practice anywhere. If you don't need the coupling/cam mechanism you can even cut them in half to give you two locks to train on.

Most come with at least two spools, but are easily repinned to other configs. And with a small modification you can even turn it into a lock that allows keyway pin reconfiguration in less than a minute once the lock is picked.

Additionally the small keyway forces you to improve your pick handling skills.

Are there any projects regarding transatlantic lock exchange? I'd sure like to pick foreign locks, and I guess I am not alone. Or is there some locksport equipment mailorder that specializes in selling locks from all over the world?
Due to financial limitations the light at the end of tunnel has been turned off until further notice.
