Cleveland 4-Way Lock

Picked this up at an Antique store in PA

You make your own cross pick from piano wire twisted together, i think raimondo described one he made somewhere as well out of wiper inserts.

They useually pop with a light rake with the afor mentioned tools but you can do them with normal tools and alternate between each 'leg' of the cross.

Some have pins on all 4 sides all the way down and some only have pins in the two 'legs' opposite each other.

I think they are a common lock in Brazil.

The cleveland was used decades ago in the us prison systems somewhat. The lock does not use pins, but instead has a series of L shaped levers if I recall correctly. I have never owned one but have seen many examples of them. The keys are odd looking as there are no conventional cuts in them. Nice lock!!

I saw a couple of keys for this lock on eBay. They looked interesting to say the least. The bitting is just a wave.

In order to get the shackles to go into the lock, they have to drill holes in the body. When it raqins, the moisture runs down the sides of the shackle. If the holes were not there, then the water would just stay locked in and would ruin the lock. With the tiny addition of this hole, the water is able to escape.
