Locks with rotating pins (Medeco, Russwin etc) - scrambling?

Information about locks themselves. Questions, tips and lock diagram information should be posted here.

Locks with rotating pins (Medeco, Russwin etc) - scrambling?

Postby workstation » 7 Jun 2006 6:36

On locks with rotating pins, e.g. Medeco, and Corbin Russwin, what happens to the rotations when the key is removed? Can anyone tell me?

Obviously, the pins don't remain at the correct rotations, but do they get scrambled, or do they return to some known rest position?

I realize it's a bit of an odd question, but thanks in advance.

not 100% sure on this but as the key pulls out it would spin the pins (reacting to the diff angle cuts on the key). Whether the turn to a predictable position would rely on several factors ie: speed the key is removed, condition of the lock...ect

Speed of removal would not make a difference, but simply withdrawing the key would scramble the pins as mentioned previously.
*insert witty comment here*

Yup. I concur. Seems that they just sort of muck about back and forth as the key comes out. I can't see any predictability in it.

Would be cool if there were though. But, then again, if it worked that way, Falle would already have a decoder for it. :P

In Medeco Biaxial the bottom pins have a tab on one side that fits into a groove in each chamber. This prevents pins from rotating too far -- so a 'complete' scramble would not be possible. It would interfere with the lock operating smoothly when a key is inserted. As the key is withdrawn the pins fall into a setting within a limited span. Hope this helps.

Remember, Medeco are high security locks and too much information should not be divulged in the public forums. I would say the original question has been answered sufficiently.
