Papaiz Locks

Postby burchlockkey » 14 Sep 2006 11:58

I am looking for information on Papaiz Locks. Has anyone ever repinned one? (I usually replace the cylinder with one from another lock that I replaced.) Also, does anyone have depth and spacing info on the PZ1 keyway or where I could get it?

Thanks.

I repin/rekey Papaiz on a daily basis, but I am afraid I don´t know about the PZ1 depth and spacing!

Also, I never use depth and spacing, I use a marker!

I found this, though

All I hear about these locks is that they're cruciform; I guess they have standard pin and tumbler locks too.

A cruciform lock is basically a pin tumber lock with a row of pins on some or all of the sides

Thanks Wrenchman. Can you exlpain how to disassemble a double cylinder to repin it? Also, what pin lengths do you use for each cut depth?

Well, if it is a "normal" double cylinder, the ones I know, then it is quite simple, I believe there are some guides around here, my favorite is of course the hair-clip tool

About the repining stuff, I always stay with the original pins I do not change them, but if you have to, I guess just about anything goes.

Just remember, that, when the pin stop moving up, you have reached max depth, that is to say, when the bottom pin stay at the shear line at all times with or without the key

papaiz

to clear this up, papaiz makes cruciform keyway locks, but it also makes common pin tumbler locks and padlocks. They may also make other high security locks as well, Wrenchman will know. :)

I really don´t know that much about Papaiz nor high security, but I did a search and found this about Luigi Papaiz:

http://www.giulianico.com/atwork_papaiz.pdf
I find it highly admirable, how one small man makes a big firm, they knew there math, back there in the fifties.
(It is in English, German and portugues)

This is a link to, what is supposed to be a high security (alta segurança) cruciform (tetra) lock (fechadura), from Papaiz!

Price 210 BRL which is about 97 USD

Thanks for the confidence anyway, Ray

PZ1 keyway is as follows

from shoulder to
1st cut is .177
2nd cut is .305
3rd cut is .433
4th cut is .561
5th cut is .689

So that's .128 between cuts

Depths are as follows

From bottom of key to

a 1 cut is .307
a 2 cut is .283
a 3 cut is .260
a 4 cut is .236
a 5 cut is .213
a 6 cut is .189
a 7 cut is .165

Total key blank thickness is .315 if you need to reverse the info provided.

So that's .024 between depths.

.043 flat is required on the cuts.
