why do you have to stand the right?

If the door is either RH inswing or outswing, standing to the right of the door, allows the police to enter quickly without you having to move out of the way.

that pearl of wisdom came from a coworker who was told by a cop because sometimes people shoot through the door thinking you are coming for thier stash or they are high.

Hehe, yea, we sometimes do. I've seen the S.T.A.R. team (our version of S.W.A.T.) open a door with a 50 pound "master key"
On the first search warrant I ever went on, they took a steel door off it's hinges and into the livingroom with the ram.
