I was back at the museum with another friend today. They have this old door on the original part of the museum which is apparently from 1916. The door is the original......looks like a new handle I looked at the deadbolt and it was a yale. I'm guessing the deadbolt is somewhat newer atlteast also.

probably unless it was a lever lock, Yale & Towne would have been around and making locks then

On the subject of low-security locks in commercial applications, I've just started a job where part of the work involves facilities management, key-issuing etc.

There is an entire tub of old keys, including two Grand Master Keys from a patented system (GEGE) that are sitting unused. All but one cylinder (the common entrance gate) have been replaced and they just hand out any key from the tub as a gate-key.

The new system is ISEO locks, cut on a universal blank. One of my first jobs was to get the new GMK cut at Timpsons  (Apparently they were very impressed how cheap this system was compared to the last, and they had to have a complete re-key after "a couple" of GMKs went missing)

Based on the numbers of keys in tubs in the office, there have been two or three systems that are no more, including 5 lever BS locks (not a single one left on site)

I don't even want to consider the electronic safe with wafer-lock override...

uninformed decisions

Postby raimundo » 2 Jun 2007 9:38

Likely the person who last made a decision regarding physical security was given a tight budget and had no background to argue the security issues, likely no one involved really knew much about locks and if the locksmith tried to tell them to go for the more expensive system, they just thought he was trying to stick them for more money.
Wake up and smell the Kafka!!!

Not that I've seen.

Because the common gate cylinder is still in use, the keys are still a security risk, as would any cylinders that we do find.

Which also reminds me, does anyone know how to get hold of ASSA part 2256. Its a scandinavian cylinder bolt through rose. The external half is completely blank, the internal half is set up for an external style scandinavian cylinder. One is missing at work, meaning that the lock can be opened with a screwdriver at the moment.
