MasterLock PadLock 572 Cutaway

Information about locks themselves. Questions, tips and lock diagram information should be posted here.

MasterLock PadLock 572 Cutaway

Postby mitch.capper » 23 Oct 2007 23:22

So I finished my first cutaway for my website, and the first more professional looking cutaway. I have done some standard key in knob cylinders before, but those were primarily for practice. I documented the exact process for those who would like to attempt similar cutaways.

It isn't a complex lock, 4 pin cylinder with no security pins, but was more an exercise to practice technique before I attempt some of my more complex locks.

So without further delay: MasterLock PadLock 572 Cutaway (http://mitchcapper.com/?p=3) And a teaser picture:

I have some americans around (2000 and 5200) I will most likely attempt soon, the 2000 should be interesting as its a disk lock without an external shackle and not a normal padlock.

Anyway comments welcome, especially if anyone has some tips on more exact filing techniques.

That lock turned out very well and your site looks very promising. I love cut away locks =)

I'm just about to start a cut away project on a cheapy "disc" lock. My problem is that it is not a removable cylinder but I got a couple from work we were going to throw away and figured I would give it a shot. If I get the time to do mine before you do yours I'll share any tips I figure out.

Yea non-removable are a the primary problem is making sure you don't damage the springs or the pins. Actually one lock that gave me some trouble early on were the masterlock magnum locks, I could pick much harder locks but these were $2 locks giving me some real issue. I knew the bitting was somewhat hard but that still didn't really explain it. So I went to try and make cutaways of them, (they also were good practice with the dremel). One I did file down by hand and that worked pretty well, it just took a long time, but I did go a bit far on it. Another I did by basically using the dremel with a cutoff wheel and cutting a line across (parallel to the sheer line) and was able to just see the tops of the pins.

The trick is to make sure that as soon as you start to see the chambers to stop filing/cutting and use riffler files or pick tools to delicately as possible open them up without hurting the springs.

Another option may be to cut the top out remove the springs, and replace them (and maybe use plexiglass to act as a side for the chamber).

Depending on the lock it may be possible to de-plug the pin chambers too (There is a thread about repinning a non-rekeyable bicycle cylinder on here I know) and just replug them with something else. This though generally requires destroying one to see how it functions though:)

I love your site! Infact I am really trying to do something similar to what you have, I just always wished you went into a bit more detail on how you do the cutaways you do.

I have a metal mill im still getting setup that should also help with some that I have planned.

Anyway I hope one day to get close to the quality of some of your cutaways, and congrats on a very good collection:)
