circlip

Postby simon_G » 13 Nov 2007 19:23

hey guys.. run into a problem.

ive rekeyed once, and i sort-of managed it then, but ordinarily i cant get the circlip to budge AT ALL. what ive managed to do before is to bend up either side of it with pliers and then itl come off.. but i cant even get that to work this time O_O

i have no idea why i cant remove the circlip, if someone could post a video, maybe youtube or something of removing one, that would be great.

or just tips would be helpful too ^^

thanks in advance

Different brands use different kinds, but often I just use some tweezers to spread the two ends of it apart and it slips right off. Also sometimes you can work it off with nothing but a small flathead screwdriver. And some brands are a real pain, and it takes longer to get the stupid clip off than rekey the thing. You just have to figure out a way that works for you.

ah, thanks ^^

i did run into trouble on both a YALE 6 pin cylnder and an ERA 5 pin.. though i couldent get the circlip back on with the YALE.

when you say to spread them apart with tweezers, how much force should i be expecting to use?

It depends entirely on the lock, among other things. Sometimes they slip right off, sometimes you need to really use a lot of force. Just be careful you don't stab yourself.

It helps to have the lock held in a small vise or something. That way both your hands can concentrate on the circlip. And make sure you do this with the lock under the cover of a plastic bag since the clip can suddenly come loose and fly off and never come back.
If a lock is a puzzle, then its key is the complete picture

You mentioned having trouble with yale cylinders.

A lot of the yale rim cylinders have a clip that looks like a circlip (we always called them clips...I don't know why) but it isn't.

With this type, you squeeze two tabs together on one side of the clip and then you can slide the clip and tail piece through the center of the plug and out the other side. Hard to picture if you haven't seen one.

I only mention this because I ruined my first one trying to pry it off like a circlip.

In my above posts, I said that we called them J E S U S clips. But the word J E S U S never showed up.

I just have to see something:
(J E S U S)
Buddha (B U D D H A)
Allah (A L L A H)
Krishna (K R I S H N A)
Muhammad (M U H A M M A D)
God (G O D)
YHWH (Y H W H)
Jehovah (J E H O V A H)

I've secretly always wanted to make a post with all the swear words I can think of to see which ones it blocks... I don't really want to try though for fear of it missing one lol
