Starter lock?

Postby colts123 » 22 Dec 2007 23:59

I'm new at lock picking just wondering what would be a good lock to start with?

Google this "starter lock site:www.lockpicking101.com" and you should find plenty of ideas

put your location in your profile then it'll be easier to say what locks to start on.

If you're in the US you could start off with a Master Lock No. 3 padlock. Once you get used to this you can graduate to a Kwikset deadbolt (the older model, not the new SmartKey).
If a lock is a puzzle, then its key is the complete picture

I just started a few days ago with a Kwikset deadbolt and I think that's a great way to go. You can open the lock and remove the pins easily, which you cannot on a padlock.

The basic idea is to take out all but one pin, practice that for a short while, add another pin, work on that, etc..., until you're back up to the full 5 pins. It doesn't take that long but gives you a good feeling of how you're progressing.

It's usually only about $2 more for a double-sided deadbolt (keyholes on both sides) than a single-sided one. I'd get a double, now you have two locks to practice on or you have a spare to loan to friends who are interested.
