How do I just buy a lock cylinder? Cutaway too?

Kinda ashamed that I searched, read topics, and everything but I'm still confused as how to make a cutaway lock. Right now I'm just practicing with the lock on my bedroom door (i dont use it, not picking important locks i rely on for security) and a padlock, but would love a cutaway.

I really don't want to spend 60 bucks on a plastic see thru one from some website that won't feel anything like a real lock.

So my question is, how can I just buy the cylinder of a lock, and then how can I make a homemade cutaway? Just with a tiny file? :<

you can make them using files, you can generally get KIK cylinders from your local locksmith if you just ask for some or for a vairly small fee.

There are a few guides, i have one on my site( http://mitchcapper.com ) for how to do a masterlock padlock but the same filing could be done on a KIK cylinder.

Wut be a KIK cylinder? And I don't really think there are any locksmiths around here...and wouldn't they be rather suspicious of me or restricted to sell em? :>

KIK is key in knob, those are basically the cylinder/lock part of door locks and such. They look similar to:

Which is from a padlock but all the same.

Locksmiths can frequently have buckets of cheap ones of these, and they would most likely be willing to give/sell you one at a cheap price. You can always go to a hardware store and buy a cheap door lock (Generally $8-12) and then take it apart to get to a cylinder like that.

You can also buy padlocks to do it with, but the trick with those is to make sure they are rekeyable (or else it is way too hard to make a cutaway to be worth it).

The basic idea of a cutaway is to depin it, file down to see the chambers, put it back together:)

If you just go to Wal-Mart or something and buy a cheap door lock - you can usually take those apart with little hassle (there are guides on the forums you can look at.) I would check with a locksmith, but you had said that they were scarce in your area. If you could find one, I'm sure if you told him what you intened to do he would be more than willing to help you. sdflk

Odds are they will not have any cut aways and if they do they are demo pieces so they won't sell them unless they get what they paid for it out of it. If they ask any questions just tll them your interested in how locks work and you're going to make a cutaway (you have to explain what this is. I know I did) out of it. I ended up getting a hand full of KIK lock cylinders this way. Even if they want you to pay something for them they are not going to be that expensive. You don't have to mention you pick lock or anything of that sort. Good Luck and try and make fiends with your local locksmith. They are a good source of info and maybe after a little while they will warm up to you and you can get better deals on locks =)

go to a scrap metal yard and ask for the brass section, they will likly have some lock cylinders to sell cheap, or just ask the guy with the shopping cart full of aluminum cans to find you one, he'll find them on doors that are being thrown out, probably a cheap way of getting them, and he will probably come back again and again with more that he finds.
